South Dallas Cultural Center Presents 'Created Equal: The Abolitionists'

The South Dallas Cultural Center (SDCC) presents "The Abolitionists," the next film in the SDCC’s "Created Equal"civil rights film series honoring the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s "March on Washington." Each of the four documentary films in the series are screened with dinner, followed by a lecture and discussion centered on each film topic. Dr. Marvin Dulaney with the University of Texas at Arlington will moderate post-screening discussion. "The Abolitionists" screens April 17 at 6 p.m. in the black box theater of the South Dallas Cultural Center, located at 3400 S. Fitzhugh Ave. in Dallas. The screening is free but space is limited. Call 214-670-0315 for reservations.

The South Dallas Cultural Center is one of 473 institutions across the country awarded a set of four films chronicling the history of the civil rights movement. The powerful documentaries include dramatic scenes of incidents in the 150-year effort to achieve equal rights for all. "Freedom Riders" received an Emmy in 2012, and "The Loving Story" and "The Abolitionists" have been nominated for Emmys in 2013.

“These films chronicle the long and sometimes violent effort to achieve the rights enumerated in the Declaration of Independence—life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness—for all Americans,” Vicki Meek, manager of the SDCC, said. “We are pleased to receive a grant from NEH to provide programming around these films. The "Created Equal" series will be a great opportunity to educate and enlighten the community we serve,” said Meek.

The "Created Equal: America’s Civil Rights Struggle" film series is an initiative by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) that uses the power of documentary films to encourage community discussion of America’s civil rights history. NEH has partnered with the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History to develop programmatic and support materials for the sites. The "Created Equal" film set is made possible through a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, as part of its "Bridging Cultures" initiative, in partnership with the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.
