Families across North Texas are gearing up for an action-packed afternoon at the 2014 Get Kidz Fit Fest on Saturday, April 5, noon – 4 p.m. at Dallas Market Hall, 2200 N. Stemmons Freeway, Dallas 75207. The free event will engage kids — and their parents — in a series of more than 50 fun, fitness and nutrition activities.
The seventh annual Get Kidz Fit Fest will once again bring more than 75 nonprofit organizations and local businesses together to help families practice active lifestyles and learn new ways to make healthy food choices.
“This event is a great example of how so many organizations, companies and sponsors are collaborating to fight childhood obesity and promote health and fitness in our communities,” said City of Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings, co-founder of the Dallas Mayor’s Youth Fitness Initiative (MyFi). “Thousands of kids will have an opportunity to learn new exercises, try new sports and taste nutritious foods—we want them to take these ideas home, and turn them into long-term healthy habits.”
In the previous six years, the festival has drawn over 25,000 children and families from 30 cities in six counties. This year, attendees can expect to try a range of activities, including golf, tennis, soccer, Zumba, yoga, hands-on food demos and more. Numerous booths will provide giveaways and feature interactive activities, including nutrition games, health information and community services.
The MyFi Family Fun Zone will offer a “wipeout” style inflatable, one of the largest inflatable obstacle courses in the city, a rock-climbing wall and family photo booth. Radio Disney will also be on-hand to provide four hours of dancing, prizes and entertainment on the main stage.
In addition, families can participate in a variety of “Fit Stops” and interactive booths, hosted by organizations such as RISE Adaptive Sports, Dallas ISD, Children’s Medical Center, FC Dallas, Gold’s Gym, Dallas Mavericks, Dallas Park and Recreation Department and many more.
“We encourage families from throughout the Greater Dallas area to join us for an afternoon of healthy fun and education,” said Myron Watkins, chair, 2014 Get Kidz Fit. “This is a chance for kids and parents to experience and explore new fitness and nutrition activities while having a wonderful time.”
Get Kidz Fit is presented by the Dallas Area Coalition to Prevent Childhood Obesity, the Dallas Mayor’s Youth Fitness Initiative, and the Community Council of Greater Dallas. Get Kidz Fit is made possible by the generosity of businesses and sponsors throughout the Dallas area.
The first 500 kids will receive a free T-shirt, provided by Luke’s Locker. For event information, please visit www.getkidzfit.org or call 972-943-4690.
