A Bishop Dunne Falcon Flies Back to Oak Cliff

A Falcon Flies Back to Oak Cliff to Teach, Coach

Cindy Elwood, a graduate of Bishop Dunne, says her favorite memories come from hanging out with friends in the cafeteria during lunch and break times and being involved in student council, tennis, and basketball.

She came to Bishop Dunne in the eighth grade from St. Elizabeth of Hungary School where she attended kindergarten through the seventh grade. She and her husband of 29 years, Don, are members of the parish. They are excited to have a new member of their family, a chocolate lab named “Puppie,” at home.

Her last few years have been spent on the other side of downtown, as principal of St. Pius X School. But Bishop Dunne is home.

She’s now teaching middle school math. A graduate of the University of Dallas with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and a Master’s degree in Education from Texas A&M, she is really excited to teach students math and help them become more confident in their math ability. But her goals are two-fold: she would also like to put Dunne on track to win a state tennis title.

The school’s other state championship team, the Falcon football team, begins their season at an away game at Dallas Christian this Friday night. Kick off is 7:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, Coach Elwood is busy recruiting for her tennis team, ready to lead her students to victory.

The school was established in 1901 as Our Lady of Good Counsel, then in 1961 joined with the Brother of the Sacred Heart to become a coed school: Bishop Dunne. The School Colors are blue for the Sisters of St. Mary of Namur and red for the Brothers of the Sacred Heart.

The school’s first graduating class of 1965 will return this October 2, 2015 for their 50th year Reunion. For more information on the weekend of events, contact Suzanne Ferguson at suzanne_grammy@verizon.net.

The 15th Annual Bishop Dunne 100 Dinner is October 22, 2015 at the Hilton Anatole. The dinner highlights the students, programs, and faculty of Bishop Dunne and raises funds for tuition assistance for the next 100 students to attend the school.
