Adamson High School to Celebrate 100th Anniversary

Parade to Celebrate 100th Anniversary

Kicking off the day’s events with a 10 a.m. celebratory parade, Adamson Alumni, students and supporters will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the original Oak Cliff High School, now Adamson High School, building on Saturday, April 25, 2015.

Parade participants will include Mayor Mike Rawlings and his wife, who is a graduate of Adamson, the Adamson Band, a float featuring Adamson’s oldest living known graduate, past Miss Adamsons, Homecoming Queens, Valentine Queens, Basketball Queens, Mr. & Miss Howdys, and Ugly Man contestants.  Former Leopardette drill team members, past Cheerleaders and many others will join the short parade to the front steps of the school.

Following the parade on 9th Street in front of the school, a short ceremony will take place featuring Alumni President John Ruiz, several of those who had a hand in saving the building from destruction in 2011, and most importantly Mr. George McDowell, age 102, the oldest known living graduate of Oak Cliff High School, member of the 1930 class.

Sitting beside the school’s new building, 201 E 9th street housed students from its opening in 1915 until the move to the new facility in 2012.  Since enrolling its first 635 students, the building is estimated to have educated some 90,000-100,000 Oak Cliff young people.

Following this special event, the Alumni Association’s Annual All-Class Reunion will take place in the new Adamson building, beginning with a luncheon, followed by a session in the auditorium featuring music, the induction of three members to the Adamson Alumni Hall of Honor.  This year’s inductees are J. Lon Tinkle, class of 1923, Lon Oakley, Jr. (’65), and former long-time teacher, Miss Eunice Tilley.  Featured speaker will be Rosemary Rumbley, noted Dallas historian and humorist.
