Oak Cliff Lions Raffle For New Mitsubishi Mirage Ends Tonight

The Oak Cliff Lions Club’s Annual Extravaganza dinner is tonight, May 22, at the Hitt Auditorium in Methodist Hospital Dallas. Former members, current members and those interested in learning about the Lions Club are encouraged to attend. Business owners new to the area are especially invited to come meet veteran business owners of the Oak Cliff area.

The reception begins in lobby of Hitt Auditorium at 6:30 p.m. with dinner to follow at 7 p.m. Dancing , music and entertainment will follow the dinner.

Drawing for a 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage will be at 9 p.m. 

Tickets for the raffle are $10 each and profits go to fund the Lions multiple charities, in particular eye exams and eye glasses for children from low income families in the Dallas area. The next regular meeting of the club is May 28 in Weiss Auditorium.  Jonathan Martin of the DSO will be the speaker. Lunch is $8.50 and the program begins at noon.

The Dallas Oak Cliff Lions Club was organized and chartered in April, 1929.  The club celebrated its 85th anniversary last month.

For over eight decades, the Oak Cliff Lions have supported a variety of local, state , national and international charities involving youth, vision, and other worthy causes and charities. 

From local projects such as funding the Oak Cliff Eye Clinic facility in the 1950s in cooperation with the City of Dallas, to a major contribution to the Dallas Zoo for the Bird and Reptile House in the 1960s, a gift of $20,000 to fund the main hall of the new Oak Cliff YMCA Building on South Hampton Road in the 1970s, a $10,000 contribution in the 1990s to help launch the tactile exhibit for the visually impaired at the Dallas Zoo, in cooperation with the Metroplex Mitsubishi Dealers, and in 2006, the Club contributed $20,000 to the Lions Sight and Tissue Foundation's Mobile Eyeglass Bus Project.  Other charitable causes supported by the Oak Cliff Lions Club include:

 
 
 
 
Located in Kerrville, Texas, this camp was built and is operated by all Lions Clubs in Texas.
 
 
Lions Sight and Tissue Foundation providing sight conservation services for needy children and adults in North Texas.
 
 
Eyeglasses for Children eye exams are provided for area school children. Glasses, if needed, are delivered to that child at school within two weeks.
 
 
The Eye Bank, located at Southwestern Medical University, was the first established eye bank in this section of the United States.
 
 
Leader Dogs for the Blind, providing funding for the selection, training and placement of leader dogs for blind individuals in our area.
 
 
 
 
Meals on Wheels
The Oak Cliff Lions Club members regularly deliver Meals on Wheels for the North Texas Visiting Nurses - Meals On Wheels program.
 
 
Lions Recycle for Sight - Lions Recycle for Sight collects eyeglasses which are distributed by the Sight and Tissue Foundation to the needy in our area and in foreign countries.
