Pets can't wear sunscreen of course and they don't sweat through their skin like we do. Dogs regulate their body heat primarily by panting, as well as through the pads of their feet and their nose. If they are unable to expel heat quickly enough, they can suffer a heat stroke.

Recognizing the following signs of heat stroke and can enable you to act quickly and help prevent an avoidable disaster:

Increased rectal temperature (over 104° requires action, over 106° is a dire emergency)

Vigorous panting

Dark red gums

Tacky or dry mucus membranes (specifically the gums)

Lying down and unwilling (or unable) to get up

Collapse and/or loss of consciousness

Thick saliva

Dizziness or disorientation

If the dog continues to overheat, breathing efforts become slowed or absent, and finally, seizures or coma can occur. ASPCA experts say taking simple precautions will help prevent your pet from overheating. Make sure they have access to plenty of fresh water and shade while outside. Keep them indoors when it's too hot and limit exercise in extreme summer temperatures.

You should never leave any pet unattended in a car at any time. According to the Humane Society of the United States, on a warm day, temperatures inside a vehicle can rise rapidly to dangerous levels. On an 85 degree day, for example, the temperature inside a car with the windows opened slightly can reach 102 degrees within 10 minutes. After 30 minutes, the temperature will reach 120 degrees. Your pet may suffer irreversible organ damage or die. If you see an animal in distress in a parked car, contact the nearest animal shelter or police. You can also spread the word about the dangers of pets in hot cars by downloading fliers and posters at MyDogIsCool.com to distribute in your community.

Growing up in Texas, I endured many a hot summer and have some of the best memories of time spent with my family and pets back then. Practice warm weather safety so you can have tons on fun in the sun with your pets too!

Happy Summer and stay cool!

The group is hosting a kickoff dinner on June 20 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Old Parkland to introduce the organization to those who have an interest and passion for conservation efforts.

The program includes Texas conservation leaders Carter Smith, executive director of the Texas Wildlife and Parks Department; The Honorable Ralph Duggins, vice chairman of Texas Park and Wildlife Commission; and Kelly Thompson, chairman, Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation.

Anne Brown, executive director of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation, said “Texas Parks & Wildlife Young Professionals will connect professionals 40 and under who are driven by a common vision to raise awareness of the land and wildlife conservation issues facing our generation; preserve hunting, fishing and outdoor heritage; lead and serve in our communities; and establish meaningful relationships among like-minded individuals.”

Some projects the group will help support include Kemp’s Ridley Sea Turtle Conservation Project, Sabine Lake Oyster Reef Restoration, Pronghorn Restoration in the Trans-Pecos, and Habitat Management for Northern Bobwhite and Grassland Birds.

Brown added, “Resources for these conservation projects are necessarily limited. Working together with the Young Professionals, we can leverage public funds with private philanthropy to ensure the continued success and expansion of successful Texas conservation projects.”

Based on “connecting for conservation,” Texas Parks & Wildlife Young Professionals is filling a need for conservation groups in Texas and will launch similar organizations in Austin and Houston.

Benefits of membership include invitations to special events and service opportunities, an annual subscription to Texas Parks and Wildlife Magazine, and multiple outreach activities. The 2013-14 events calendar includes two service projects focused on the John Bunker Sands Wetland Center and Guadalupe bass sampling on the South Llano River.

The dinner will be held at Old Parkland in the Pecan Room, at 3819 Maple Avenue, Dallas. Limited tickets are still available for the evening dinner, which is $25. What I did not know at the time is that there is a traumatic brain injury (TBI) every 16 seconds in America. Every 16 seconds! TBI is more common than all ofthe cancers combined, yet most people are unaware of the far-reaching effects of a brain injury.

Here in Allen, Texas, we started a website called TryMunity. We are dedicated to making people aware of Traumatic Brain Injuries and prevention of Traumatic Brain Injuries is a passion of ours.

At TryMunity, it’s our top priority to provide resources, information, and support when it comes to traumatic brain injury prevention. We know how challenging it can be when a loved one, especially a child, has suffered a brain injury — it has an impact on everyone who is involved in the life of the victim. Even harder to imagine, the road to recovery can be long and difficult. In some cases, a life may be permanently changed.

Much coverage has been given to new reports linking contact sports and traumatic brain injuries. While sports are fun ways to kids to exercise, learn life skills, and socialize with others, the prevalence of concussions make them dangerous. Below, we explore some ways you can protect your sports-loving children from life-changing brain damage.

Proper Gear is Essential

Brain injuries in sports are common and of great concern. On a national level, the NFL and other contact sports are making changes to ensure fewer brain injuries occur.

One of the most notable incidents of a brain injury making an impact on the world of sports was the death of Dale Earnhardt Sr. As a result of his tragic accident that involved brain trauma, all drivers were required to wear helmets with a full face shield and neck restraints to reduce the chance of severe injuries. Racing courses were also designed with more protection.

Families can take measures at home to protect their children. Having the proper head gear is a must, no matter the sport.

Helmets should be of good quality and fit correctly.

Helmets should be worn during contact sports, while riding a bike, while rollerskating or skateboarding, and when skiing.

While other types of padding are always recommended, the brain and head should always be emphasized.

Be Prompt with Treatment

In any instance of a head injury, no matter how small, treatment should be immediate. When there is any doubt, it’s best to call the doctor or head to the emergency room. This plan of action applies to injuries at home, school, or during a sporting event.

You should also be on alert for concussion symptoms. A concussion is considered a brain injury and can result in serious problems, affecting memory, balance, concentration, and overall coordination. Common symptoms include:

a headache

dizziness

loss of consciousness

nausea

problems with speech

buzzing in the ears

If your child experiences any of these symptoms after a blow to the head, seek medical attention immediately. It’s always better to be safe than sorry in these situations.

Educate Yourself and Your Family

Family members must find their way in dealing with the consequences of a traumatic brain injury, assisting an individual in overcoming day-to-day obstacles. New coping skills may be necessary with the care and support of an entire household.

Take advantage of the valuable resources that are available to you at TryMunity. Sign up for your membership today and start enjoying our support services, helpful blogs, and inspirational stories.

Let’s work together to deal with brain trauma and prevent it!

Folsom Leadership Award Patrons to Gather at Garretts' Home to Honor Rev. Mark Craig

Methodist Health System Foundation has announced the date and place of its Patron Party to honor 2013 Robert S. Folsom Leadership Award community advocate and retired Senior Minister of Highland Park United Methodist Church, Reverend Mark Craig. Major underwriters of $10,000 or more will be invited to Brill and Jason Garrett’s home on August 27. The Folsom Leadership Award dinner will be held on September 24 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Hilton Anatole Hotel’s Grand Ballroom.

Established in 2005, the award recognizes individuals whose demonstrated commitment and excellence in community leadership emulate the achievements of former Dallas Mayor Robert S. Folsom. Lana and Barry Andrews and Natalie and Mike McGuire will serve as event co-chairs.

Methodist Health System Foundation President and CEO April Box Chamberlain said, “We are honored that right before Jason Garrett hits the gridiron to coach the Dallas Cowboys, he and Brill will generously open their home to host their friend and pastor Rev. Mark Craig. Mark represents the spirit of the Folsom Leadership Award, and we are honored to celebrate his achievements, while thanking our supporters.”

In 2012, Methodist Health System provided more than $125 million in charity care, an increasingly disproportionate share of charity care in the Dallas market. The Folsom event has been recognized as one of Dallas’ largest fundraising events, and it has raised more than $8 million over the past eight years to benefit Methodist Health System’s programs and services.

The proceeds for the 2013 event will benefit the new Charles A. Sammons Trauma and Critical Care Tower at Methodist Dallas Medical Center. Designated as a Level II trauma center, Methodist Dallas is a crucial part of the Dallas County trauma plan. The hospital provides a high level of tertiary-care services, including adult trauma care, multi-organ transplant services, nationally rated high-risk infant care, and neuro-critical care, and is a primary recipient of trauma occurring within southwest Dallas and the surrounding region. Methodist Dallas treats more than 1,500 trauma patients and over 60,000 emergency patients each year from a 150-mile radius. Scheduled for completion in summer 2014, the one-of-a-kind new trauma and critical care center will expand the hospital’s emergency department ten-fold.

Past Folsom Leadership Award recipients include Robert S. Folsom (2005), Nancy Ann Hunt (2006), Troy Aikman (2007), Laura Bush (2008), the late Norman Brinker (2009), Pat and Emmitt Smith (2010), Trevor Rees-Jones (2011), and Mike Boone (2012).

Methodist Health System is a nonprofit organization. If you are interested in supporting the Robert S. Folsom Award or other vital health care and community programs, please contact Methodist Health System Foundation Vice President of Development Joy Duncan at 214-947-4555 or joyduncan@mhd.com. More than 140 people attended the dinner to hear about the new plans for the trails and the latest developments on the Trinity project, which includes construction on the Margaret McDermott Bridge (I-30).

Mary McDermott Cook, chair of The Trinity Trust, talked about the Trinity project, particularly since work began on the Horseshoe Project, which includes the Margaret McDermott Bridge. “What Santiago and Tina Calatrava have given us is a hike and bike trail. The Margaret McDermott Bridge, with the biking and pedestrian elements designed by Calatrava, will allow more connectivity to the Southern White Rock Creek," Cook said.

Mayor Mike Rawlings and former Mayor Laura Miller stood beside McDermott as she broke ground on the turf of a scale model of the McDermott Bridge.

Rawlings said, “This second signature bridge signals the gateway into the great urban forest. Being Mayor of Dallas has opened Micki’s and my eyes. It’s amazing that we have this forest in the city of Dallas.” He also talked about how trails are becoming increasingly important in Dallas as more people use them to hike, bike, walk and run.

Dr. Gail Thomas, president and CEO of The Trinity Trust, added, “We are so appreciative of Margaret McDermott and her generous spirit. Both the bridge and the new trails will only elevate Dallas’ reputation as one with exceptional architectural bridges and outdoor hike and bike trails.”

The Trinity Trust will launch a fundraising campaign for the trails in the near future.

Some highlights include:

14.3-mile trail from the “Audubon to the Arboretum”

Multi-million dollar trail through the Great Trinity Forest

First portion of this trail announced and named the AT&T Trail – paid $2.5 million

Trail will connect communities not previously connected

Trail will include trailheads, benches, landscaping, poetry, and other amenities

Guests enjoyed cocktails and passed hors d’oeuvres along with a special “Margaretini” in honor of the new bridge. The centerpieces were replicas of the new bridge. Catered by Bolsa, the dinner included beef tenderloin and sea bass served on southwestern grits. A three-piece orchestra played classical music.

Ross Perot added, “Who else would deserve to have a bridge named after her than Margaret McDermott? She deserves it.” He then led the crowd in the British tradition of three hip, hip hoorays in Mrs. McDermott’s honor.

Dallas City Manager Mary Suhm said to Margaret McDermott, “Your generosity has changed the face of the city. You inspire us... you make us better.”

Those in attendance included the namesake of the bridge, Margaret McDermott, who summed up the appreciation of those who came: “I want to express my gratitude and appreciation for Dallas today. For the first time in the school's history, a former graduate delivered the commencement address. Mark J. Murrell, TSCA Class of 1998 and Pastor and Attorney for the City of Dallas, gave an inspirational address targeted toward the challenges graduates face. Inspired by God and his love for his alma mater, Murrell sent the graduates off with a rousing farewell, ensuring the promises God has for the future!

Lucky Dog Books, Paperbacks Plus Offer Memorial Day Weekend Sales

Bargain book hunters rejoice! Almost all of North Texas' general used bookstores are having a sale this weekend. The percentage discount varies, but is at least 20 percent off at all of these.

Half Price Books is having its annual Memorial Day Sale at all of its locations.

Recycled Books, in its wonderful downtown Denton building, is having its 30th Anniversary Sale this weekend.

And Lucky Dog Books and Paperbacks Plus, which had just had an internet-based "Flash Sale" last weekend, and was considering reprising it this weekend since many folks missed the original, decided upon seeing these other events that it would join the book party this weekend with a full blown Re-Flash Sale of their own for everyone.

One consideration for Lucky Dog Books was not to step on the toes, so to speak, of Recycled Books celebration. Owner John Tilton stated, "We respect what they do there and want to honor and support their celebration of this historic event for them and their readers."

So, Lucky Dog Books and Paperbacks Plus are making a special offer to encourage everyone to make a purchase at the sale at Recycled Books. Shop there during the sale and save your receipt. Bring it to either of these sponsoring bookstores anytime after these sales are over, and they will give you $5 off any used purchase as a way of helping pay the gas to Denton.

Also, they have created a Facebook event they are calling the Long Weekend Book Bash Tour to encourage folks who like bargains on not just books, but all the other goodies that stores like these have including movies and music at great prices even when they aren't having a sale, to make a tour of several of the shops involved. A couple of sample itinerary maps are shown.

It's a great time to stock up for summer reading, watching and listening. Take the tour!

Bishop Dunne Theology Teacher Wins Oak Cliff Chamber's Educator of the Year Award

Bishop Dunne Theology Teacher Jim Martin accepted the award for Oak Cliff's High School Educator of the Year today from the Oak Cliff Chamber of Commerce.

Kiest Blvd. Arts and Crafts Booths are filling up—still a few left—and a food court has been established. Most importantly for a Jazz Fest, ten talented artists will be performing from noon to 10 p.m.

Freddie Jones is an amazing, energetic musical talent who has played his trumpet throughout the Southwest, abroad in Paris, the Hague, and Rotterdam. He has performed at the Labyrinth Walk Coffee House, were he was a huge hit.

The Inner City All Stars, APCA’s Best Band” of the year, is one of the most sought-after bands in the Metroplex. They have appeared on National TV, toured Japan, Guam and Okinawa as part of the Armed Forces Entertainment and have played as a support band for Bo Diddley and the Family Stone.

Jennifer Martin is an understated, classy and somewhat torchy singer with a clear voice who makes each ballad and jazzy uptempo tune her very own.

Larry Lampkinis known for his passionate vocals, hot guitar licks and exciting showmanship. He has crafted his own brand of blues with elements of soul, funk, rock and country—a most exciting new artist.

Carolyn Lee Jones is an accomplished vocalist with an open, easy , smooth and classy style with an outstanding repertoire, with musicians of the terrific variety backing her up.

Funky Knuckles mission is to “perform the music we hear and that comes out of us naturally." So far, the natural sound has the Knuckles going places.

Alphonso Sanders brings his Mississippi roots to his music. He has performed regionally, nationally and internationally at many recognized festivals, including the Lucerne Blues Festival. The North Sea Festival and the Montreaux Jazz Festival. Dr. Sanders has degrees in music from Mississippi Valley State University, Valdosta State University and the University of Mississippi.

Miss March and Her Texas Sugar Daddy’s is known for her mesmerizing stage performance derived from the early 20th century Divas including Bessie Smith and Big Mama Thornton. An entertainer, not just a singer.

Shelly Carrol is a critically-acclaimed saxophonist and former One O’Clock Lab Band member. He has played with Nancy Wilson, Tony Bennett, and the Duke Ellington Orchestra. He teaches part-time and gives clinic as he is able.

Shoot Low Sheriff combines strings, horns and piano, recapturing the sound of the Southern dancehalls of the ‘30s and ‘40s. They add equal parts urban and rural, sophisticated and rustic, to a playlist of classics and original songs.

The Arts & Crafts Fair will feature the art work of Sam Fuller, the bat houses of Janet Smith, the Dallas Soap Company, Anna’s Ceramics, SJ’s Expressions Triple Scented Candles, a Voters Registration, among others. There are still a few spaces available. For information, call Judy at 972.291.2710.

For more information and for advance tickets, available until June 20 for $15 (adults) and $10 (children 12 to 18), please click here.
Thank you so much for your continued support of KSC and our annual Pre-Concert Festival. This is the fifth year that DSO returns to Kidd Springs Park as part of their community concert series, and it’ll be our fourth year to hold the pre-concert festival (although last year’s was rained out). Nothing shows support for our DSO like bringing out the masses for this annual concert. The concert on Wednesday, June 5 starts at 8 p.m., and the pre-concert festival will start at 6 p.m. If it rains, the concert moves inside to the newly-renovated Kidd Springs Recreation Center.

We would GLADLY welcome your participation this year as a sponsor or a participating vendor. Please see the attached form that details the various ways you can participate. The day of the pre-concert festival and the DSO concert is set for June 5, starting at 6 p.m. In the event of rain, we will accommodate the vendors in the Recreation Center. The DSO will move indoors and provide the concert from the gym. The park is located at 711 West Canty Street.

Your ongoing support helps us accomplish our goal of making the concert bigger and better – truly a community-wide event for us – every year.

Please contact me for the general sponsorship/ vendor form or with any questions. You can reach me at kiddsprings.central@gmail.com or at 214.718.2384.

Thank you for your interest and continued support of Kidd Springs Park, the DSO and Oak Cliff!

Regards,

Tino

It is cheaper than buying a cup of coffee a day, easier than buying a book on Amazon.com and less of a commitment than that person you dated in high school for two months.

BubbleLife.com, the Dallas-Fort Worth leader in hyperlocal news, is paving the way for local businesses to reach a built-in audience that lives, works and goes to school in the neighborhoods they serve. On Tuesday, May 14, BubbleLife launched the Neighborhood Sponsorship Package, an inexpensive way to attract new customers for only $99 a month.

“With the Neighborhood Sponsorship Package, local businesses are showcased alongside the community news that more than 100,000 of our readers trust,” said Saffie Farris, publisher at BubbleLife.com. “Their businesses will receive exposure every day – 24 hours a day on our news website along with coverage in the daily email newsletter to our subscribers.”

A local business needs to remind the community that it is open for business. With BubbleLife.com’s Neighborhood Sponsorship Package, it is now affordable for neighborhood businesses to have a consistent presence in targeted areas.

The Neighborhood Sponsorship Package features several types of ads to attract new customers to your business, including:

A front page ad on a BubbleLife.com news website

An alternating featured business ad on a BubbleLife.com news website

An alternating featured text ad on both a BubbleLife.com news website and daily newsletter

As an introduction to BubbleLife.com, the package also comes with a limited offer of your choice of one of three bonus offers:

Thanks to the Friends of the Dallas Public Library, D Magazine, D Academy, and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, The Big Read Dallas encouraged everyone to read together.

To further celebrate the joy of reading, The Big Read Dallas held a Librarian of the Year competition. More than 60 librarians were nominated, with many of them receiving more than one nomination. A committee gathered to review the nominations, and it is The Big Read Dallas’ pleasure to announce that the 2013 Librarian of the Year is Pamela Brown, media specialist at William Hawley Atwell Middle School Law Academy.

More than 300 nominations for Brown came in from friends, family, and students. “Ms. Pam Brown is funny, cool, tight, and fun to hang out with,” said one nomination. “She is a cool rapper. When she raps, it is like I am listening to the radio 97.9 The Beat.”

“Ms. Pam’s enthusiasm and concern for her students is unparalleled,” wrote another nominator. “She played a big role in my childhood, and it makes me so happy that other children are able to learn from her today.”

Brown received $1,000 and an e-reader as her prize. She was recognized at The Big Read Dallas’ Read-In at Klyde Warren Park on April 27.

The National Endowment for the Arts inaugurated The Big Read as a pilot project in 2006 with ten communities featuring four books. The Big Read continues to expand to include more communities and additional books. To date, more than 1,000 grants have been awarded to communities in the U.S. to host Big Reads since the program’s 2007 national launch.

Friends of the Dallas Public Library is a membership-based nonprofit founded in 1950 and exists to support the mission of the Dallas Public Library system in its delivery of resources, services, and information to the Dallas community. Click here for more information.

D Academy is a leadership development program underwritten by D Magazine to create informed experienced stewards for the city of Dallas. Through an intensive program of lectures, coursework, and The Big Read Dallas, participants are schooled in the workings of the city—past, present, and future.

Grammy Award-Winning Legend Thelma Houston Headlines MetroBall

Thelma Houston, the Grammy Award-winning legend and HIV/AIDS humanitarian will headline the 8th Annual MetroBall on Friday, June 7, at the Station 4 nightclub located at 3911 Cedar Springs Road in Dallas.
