The Dallas City Council on September 11^th unanimously passed a thoroughfare plan amendment for Fort Worth Avenue.  The illustration shows the proposed conceptual design for the roadway configuration for the entire 3.5 miles of the West Commerce/Fort Worth Avenue corridor from Beckley to Westmoreland.  Proposed are four 11-foot lanes of vehicular traffic, a 14-foot median, an 8-foot parallel parking space on both sides of the street, a 7-sidewalk on both sides of the street (this all in the 100 feet of right-of-way--any additional sidewalk width required by the PD in certain districts will have to be outside the ROW), a two-way, 8-foot bicycle track on the south side of the roadway with 2 feet allowed for physical separation, and 1 foot on each side for curb space.  All added up equals 100 feet of ROW. 

The work on the entire corridor is projected to cost about $10 million, and the work is expected to occur in phases.  Unutilized funds from a previous bond program is available to start a first phase from Sylvan to Pittman (Belmont to Chicken Scratch).  Under the best case scenario, results would be seen sometime in 2015.

2013 Spare pARTS fundraiser — Saturday September 21

This year our 2013 Spare pARTS fundraiser for FWADG will be held on Saturday evening, September 21st 2013 at Babb Bros. BBQ at 330 Bedford, south of Singleton just west of the Calatrava bridge. As usual, great art, fabulous food, beverages and this year, live music from the Texas Rock Association as we recycle the 70s while featuring art made from recycled/repurposed materials.

Last year’s fundraiser was an incredible success! Thank you to all the Dallas area artists that participated.

All of the art created from discarded objects and recycled materials for last year’s fundraiser has afforded us a juried $5000 commission for a public art installation along our corridor. The winning submission by Robertus Joost van der Wege, the Magic Bike (a three-wheel, seven-seat bicycle 16 to 18 feet long made from recycled/re-purposed materials), is currently under construction. It will be installed and unveiled at the vendor trailer area at 400 W. Commerce by August 24^th.  A christening ceremony will be held on site on September 7^th at 5 pm.

Please help FWADG make this year’s fundraiser a success by creating more fabulous art from discarded, lost and found objects. Our fundraiser is Sept 21, so now is the time to get those brain juices flowing, those glue guns and welders warmed up, and those paint palettes glistening with color.

SPARE PARTS PROPOSAL

 Overview and Project Goals

The Fort Worth Avenue Development Group is happy to announce the return of the Spare pARTS Public Art Initiative. We are requesting proposals from Dallas area artists for functional, site-specific artwork that encourages pedestrian activity and makes use of recycled/repurposed materials. Our goal is to encourage street life and pride along Fort Worth Avenue by recruiting and supporting the artistic ingenuity that epitomizes the DIY spirit of the area.

WHAT

-Reuse, repurpose: Installations must make useof recycled, re-used, and re-defined materials in
keeping with the spirit of the incremental redevelopment of the neighborhood.
-Utility: The art is required to fill a utilitarian role, such as providing shade, seating, bike parking, lighting, etc.
-Location: The installation(s) will be placed on private property along Fort Worth Avenue. Artists are encouraged to visit the site and must tailor their proposal to that specific location.

The site for 2013 is:

-Vendor Trailer area fronting Dallas West Mobile Home/RV Park on W. Commerce St.
-Budget: The project budget is $5000. This amount is to cover materials, supplies, labor, and installation
costs. Please consider the cost of anchoring, lighting, and any landscaping in your proposal.
-Lifespan: It is understood that due to the material nature and budgetary limits these works will not last
forever, but they should be designed and built to remain functional for a period of at least five years.
-Artist Eligibility: All artists must be at least 18 years of age.

Selection Process:

Any artist/artist team over 18 years of age can submit one or more proposals. There is no fee for submissions. The selection panel jury consists of 5 local area arts professionals, chaired by Kay Kallos, Office of Dallas Cultural Affairs.

All submissions will be reviewed by the selection panel.
Three submissions will be selected as finalists, and the artists must present their projects to the selection panel in person. Each of the three finalists will receive a $100 stipend to cover additional time and materials spent on project details such as final illustrations and /or 3D renderings.

Submission Requirements

1. Letter of Interest: Please describe your interest in the project and your approach towards the installation. Please include a description of the location, the scale of the installation, materials to be used, and requirements for long-term (5 years) maintenance and care. Letters should be no more than one page in length.
2. Resume/CV: Please include a professional resume or CV along with a brief biography and artist statement.
3. Image of proposed work: Please include a rendering, sketch, photo, 3D, or other visual representation of the work for review.
4. Images of past work: Please include relevant images of past artworks. Images may be submitted via prints, CD, or as hyperlinks to online photos.

SYLVAN AVE. BIKE LANE PROPOSAL

Real momentum is finally starting to build for the 2011 Dallas Bike Plan,
It is important that everyone attend the meeting at the Salon Las Americas to discuss an amendment to the thoroughfare plan regarding the bike lanes on Sylvan Ave. from 1-30 south to Colorado Blvd.

If you would like to bike to the meeting there will be a meet up at Oddfellows
in the Bishop Arts District at 5:30 pm to ride to the Salon Las Americas.
