1.  The most important way to be a green pet owner is to adopt.  Rescuing a discarded pet is one of the most humane actions you can take to help animals and the planet. According to the Humane Society, “Four million cats and dogs—about one every eight seconds—are put down in U.S. shelters each year. Often these animals are the offspring of cherished family pets.” The green pet owner will rescue and re-home a displaced dog or cat rather than buy one.

2.  Whether you rescue, find, or adopt your beloved pet, the next best way to be a "green" pet owner is to spay or neuter.  In doing so, you are taking an active role in helping to control the pet population.

3.  Buy pet foods that are all-natural or organic.

4.  Purchase toys and other pet products that are made with natural, organic or recycled materials.

5.  With all purchases, buy close to home. Purchase products that are sustainable and don't have to be replaced often. Apply those same principles to products for your pet, and you'll make an even more positive impact on the environment.
