On the third Friday of each month, the Dallas Museum of Art (DMA) hosts a Late Night when the museum is open till midnight. Almost all exhibits are free and each Late Night features several different activities and experiences for individuals of all ages including concerts, tours, films and live shows.

Also, the DMA features its annual Summer Block Party in addition to the Late Night, specially catering to the teen population in the Dallas area. This past Friday, June 19, the DMA hosted the outdoor event around the central theme of superheroes.

The Dallas Arts district was blocked off on both sides, so no cars were allowed to pass through. Several different food trucks lined up selling a diverse variety of food from Bombay Chopsticks to Kona Ice.

The Nasher Sculpture Center and the Crow Collection of Asian Art exhibits were both open until midnight for visitors to enjoy.

Some of the exhibitions featured at the event included As Sweet as it Gets, a collection of artwork from the modern Belgian artist Michaël Borremans. Another exhibit included Between Action and the Unknown, a myriad of different pieces throughout the careers of Kazuo Shiraga and Sadamasa Motonaga. Both of these artists originated in Japan and for several years were a part of the Gutai Art Association, a well-known group of postwar Japanese artists.

As a part of the overarching theme of superheroes, the DMA also showcased several unique experiences featuring well respected professors and actors. Dr. James Kakalios, Physics professor at the University of Michigan, lead an interesting discussion surrounding the plausible scientific realities of superhero comic books centered on his book titled “The Physics of Superheroes.” Additionally, Dr. Matthew Brown, professor at UTD, spoke regarding the origin and history of these superheroes. Visitors also had the opportunity to see actor Jeffrey Schmidt perform scenes from the book “It’s Superman.”

Visitors who wanted to take home a souvenir from this fun night also had the opportunity to stop by the Arts district Summer Courtyard Sale which had several discounts on merchandise from the DMA.

The DMA hosted an evening which had a multitude of different activities and events to attract visitors from the whole Dallas area of all age group. The annual Summer Block party was a great way for families and friends to kick back and finally get ready for summer.
