Although weather forecasters are predicting a wet weekend for the Dallas area, city officials are still calling on residents to partake in the national Fix a Leak initiative. The annual March campaign hopes to reduce water loss by fixing household leaks and will be held from March 12-18 this year.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that water leaks in a single home, on average, can account for 10,000 gallons of water. That's enough water to fill an average-sized backyard swimming pool. The most common and easily repaired household leaks include dripping faucets and worn toilet flappers.

"This week-long focus on repairing leaks is especially important at a time when Dallas and the rest of North Texas continue to face ongoing water restrictions due to the recent drought," Director of City of Dallas Water Utilities Jody Puckett said. "Residents have heard a lot about reducing outdoor landscaping, but they can also help conserve by fixing leaks inside and outside their homes."

Dallas Water Utilities officials recommend that home and business owners also check landscape irrigation systems for leaks, broken pipes and damaged sprinkler heads. If homeowners need to repair or replace a plumbing fixture, they are reminded to look for EPA WaterSense labeled products that have been tested and certified to save water.
