Bishop Dunne student Catherine Day and her Swim Coach Robbie Zeske raised nearly $1,000 in honor of cancer survivor Coach Steve Cobb, assistant swim coach for Bishop Dunne in 2010 and 2011, by swimming a mile at Lake Ray Hubbard during “Swim Across America” on Saturday.
Their Bishop Dunne swim teammates helped sponsor them. The accomplishment was more impressive because it was windy making the water choppy, and Catherine is just 13. “She turns 14 in two weeks,” said her proud father, Paul Day.
Swim Across America, Inc., [SAA] is dedicated to raising money and awareness for cancer research, prevention and treatment through swimming-related events. With the help of hundreds of volunteers nationwide and past and current Olympians, SAA is helping find a cure for cancer through athleticism, community outreach and direct service.
Since 1987 SAA has grown to hold dozens of events all over the country, each with its own distinct personality, including events under the Golden Gate bridge in San Francisco, swimming with NESCAC conference swimmers at Nantucket Beach, or even with Olympians in Boston Harbor. “Swim Across America” began as a grassroots organization with events developing locally. These events are now held coast to coast, and have raise hundreds of thousands of dollars to fight cancer.
Paul Day said, “Coach Zeske is a wonderful swim coach and Catherine enjoys being on her swim team.” Zeske has been a teacher for the Diocese of Dallas since 1997 and at Bishop Dunne for the last seven years. In addition to being the Head Swim Coach, she is an Art teacher and Yoga instructor at the school. Many of her swimmers come with little experience to the team and leave as State contenders in the sport.
Catherine attended Holy Trinity Catholic School for her elementary grades and has been attending Bishop Dunne’s Middle School. She’ll be a freshman at Bishop Dunne High School this fall.
