Turner House Announces "Rising Star" Exhibition and Fundraiser

Turner House, home of the Oak Cliff Society of Fine Arts, will debut its “Rising Star” exhibition and fundraiser Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 28-29, at the historic Oak Cliff home. Twelve prestigious Dallas galleries have each nominated one emerging Texas artist who is not yet represented in galleries. Participating galleries are: Barry Whistler Gallery, Conduit Gallery, Craighead Green, Cris Worley Fine Arts, David Dike Fine Art, Galleri Urbane, Holly Johnson Gallery, Mary Tomás Studio Gallery, Photographs Do Not Bend, The Reading Room, Valley House Gallery and Sculpture Garden and Talley Dunn Gallery.

According to artist Kenda North, co-chair of the event, the 101-year-old Turner House has a long history of showcasing Texas artists. “Rising Star” continues that tradition and highlights some exciting new artists who are just beginning to gain attention in the art community, she said.

A fundraiser reception will be held Saturday, Sept. 28, from 7 to 9 p.m. and will include a presentation by Barry Whistler on contemporary Texas art. Refreshments will be served. There will be a free public reception Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday tickets are $50 for OCSFA members and $75 for non-members. On Saturday, a non-member may join OCSFA for a special price of $85, $50 for the event and $35 for the annual membership. Sponsorships are available.

Turner House, located at 401 N. Rosemont in the Winnetka Heights area of North Oak Cliff, has been hosting art exhibits for more than 80 years. Recent exhibits highlighted works of The Dallas Nine, Women Artists of the Texas Centennial and works by contemporary Oak Cliff artists. In fulfillment of the mission of the OCSFA, Turner House promotes the arts, celebrates life events, fosters community and preserves history. It is known for its popular annual Salon Series, celebrating music, art and architecture, as well as free community-focused events such as Movies on the Lawn. OCSFA received the 2013 Stewardship Award from Preservation Dallas for its long commitment to historic reservation.
