Lady Falcons Soar to New Academic Heights

The Bishop Dunne 2012-13 Lady Falcons Varsity Volleyball team received the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award announced on Aug. 7, the highest honor a team can win.

The requirement for the award is for each member of the team to have an overall GPA of 3.3 or higher for both semesters. The 11 girls on the varsity team last year each had a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

Head Coach Michael Kistner, now in his fifth year of coaching at Dunne and his 14th year of teaching at the school, said it’s the first time his team has received the distinction.

“Last year’s team was smart and talented,” he said, “and I expect our team this year to be even more athletic.”

All seven seniors on his team last year went off to college, most with multiple scholarship offers. Team member Dreu Dixson earned a full tuition scholarship to Rice, where she’ll be on the track team competing in the Shot Put.

New JV Coach Audrey Smith notes that this year’s varsity volleyball team’s members “are very close – which helps them to play better together.”

The 2013-14 Lady Falcons have been practicing and are beginning their season this month. They will compete in the Lady Ram Tournament this weekend at Berkner High School in Richardson.
