Movie Memorabilia Collector to Share Props at 'Super Mario Bros.' Roast

When The Mocky Horror Picture Show takes the stage Thurs., March 23, to roast the all-around film stinker “Super Mario Bros. (1993), the Dallas-based comedy troupe will do so with some of the film’s silly props. Blake Dumensil of Houston, a graphic designer, artist and avid collector of both film props and game memorabilia, will share some of the props used in Nintendo’s famous, live-action film flop.

Mocky Horror will riff on the movie at 9:15 p.m. at The Texas Theatre in Oak Cliff, and Dumensil will share in the fun with his props; he owns Mario and Luigi’s Thwomp Stomper boots, Princess Daisy’s dress and several other pieces, but even Mocky Horror troupe members Danny Gallagher of Addison and Liz Barksdale and Albie Robles, both of Irving, don’t know which props Dumensil will bring.

“His props have gone on display all over the country at film conventions,” Gallagher said. “They will return to National Videogame Museum in Frisco soon in honor of the movie’s 30th anniversary.” The computer-animated film stars the late Bob Hoskins as Mario and John Leguizamo as Luigi, and it was universally panned and a commercial flop when it was released on May 28, 1993; however, it’s become a cult favorite.

Throughout the screening on March 23, Mocky Horror will make jokes about the film and special prompts will appear on the screen that will tell the audience when to yell pre-written lines and throw stuff at the screen so they can join in the fun.

Tickets are $14 and are available at Mocky Horror Picture Show Roasts "Super Mario Bros." Tickets, Thursday, March 23 2023 | Prekindle. The event comes two weeks before the scheduled release of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” on April 7; the computer-animated film stars Chris Pratt as Mario and Charlie Day as Luigi.

Texas Theatre is at 231 W. Jefferson Blvd.
