Information on a new Scouting BSA troop in Oak Cliff for girls.

Troop 5 and Venture Crew 5 are excited to announce the start of a new Scouting USA troop for girls in Oak Cliff. The new Troop will be associated with our charter organization Kessler Park United Methodist Church.  As you may know BSA, now Scouting USA will be allowing girls into scouting starting in February 2019. Our Council (Circle 10 Council) and District (Mustang District) are also excited to announce the new troop.

The Troop 5 and Venture Crew 5 Troop Committee, announces the formation of a girl only troop starting in February 2019. The new Troop will become part of the Kessler Park United Church program of Scouting. The new Troop will share the Scout Hut, van and equipment with the other two troops. The new troop will have a separate outdoor program and service projects except for selected events with troop, crew, district or council.

Laura Walsh has volunteered to be the new Scout Master. Laura brings years of experience from the troop, district and council level. As an award winning certified instructor, Laura understand the importance of having a program that teaches leadership skills and values.

All interested girls, parents and volunteers are asked to attend a program kickoff meeting on Monday, February 4th at 7pm at the Scout Hut. The Scout Hut is located on the grounds of the Kessler Park United Methodist Church at 1215 Turner near Colorado. If you have any questions, please contact Laura Walsh by email at bison85@aol.com.  For additional information from our Mustang District, contact our District Manager Charles ‘Pete’ Peterson.

Information From Laura, the New Scoutmaster:

I'm excited to be the new Scoutmaster for Scouts BSA Troop 5 for girls/young women, chartered by Kessler Park United Methodist Church. KPUMC has had an all male Boy Scout Troop associated with it for over 70 years, also called Troop 5, and has also supported a co-ed Venturing Crew for older youth for the last 15 years or so. There is a strong Scouting history at KPUMC, and the new Troop will benefit from the ability to share program space, equipment and some leadership with these other units.

My background: I have been an Adult Leader with both of the existing KPUMC scout units for a number of years, first as an Assistant Scout Master with the Troop (while my son was working towards Eagle) and then as Advisor of Crew 5. I really enjoy working with the youth, watching them overcome challenges, develop as leaders and accomplish their goals. A strong believer in the importance of the outdoor program in Scouting, I've done a lot of car camping, and have also facilitated youth high adventure trips to scuba dive in the Florida Keys, backpack in the mountains of New Mexico, Colorado and Wyoming, and to canoe the Boundary Waters near Bissett, Manitoba, Canada. I'm also an active Adult Trainer at the Council level, sharing what I've learned in Scouting with other leaders.

My staff of experienced scouters and I couldn't be more excited about the opportunity to work with the young ladies in our new all-girl Troop.

We have tentatively scheduled a program kick-off meeting for interested young ladies and parents, at 6:00 PM on Monday, January 28, 2019 in the "Scout Hut" behind KPUMC, 1215 Turner Ave, Dallas, 75208.  We anticipate that our first Troop Meeting will be the following  Monday, February 4, 2019, at 7:00 PM, and that we will meet every Monday thereafter at that same time (excepting major holidays and a Summer break). The new Troop will meet inside the church on Monday night's but may join the boys occasionally for skill instruction, flag ceremonies, etc.

We are accepting applications from interested prospective female scouters now. Annual dues are $65, payable with the application. But payment plans are also available. Those dues cover the annual charter fee paid to Council and other annual expenses. First-time applicants will receive a Troop Tshirt, Scouting handbook, and unit patches for their uniform.

We will submit all approved applications to Circle Ten Council, our local Scouts BSA Council, on or after the date girls can first register for scouting: 2/1/2019.

If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to contact me. My personal email address is bison85@aol.com and my phone is 214.557.6182. Do not add my phone number to the story.

Best Regards,
Laura Walsh
