Dallas Police Department Choir Lights Up Holidays With Concert Schedule

When most people see a large group of cops headed their way, they tend to turn on their heel in the opposite direction.

But what about singing cops?

For 25 years, the members of the Dallas Police Choir have suited up into their uniforms to share their expert vocal stylings. This Christmas season, the choir, dubbed "A-cop-pella" will embark on a 12-stop tour throughout Dallas, caroling through the halls of hospitals, convalescent homes and perform at a few malls in between.

"The police department is painted so negatively by the media, that we’ve become positive PR for the department," said DPD Sr. Cpl. Alena Gallardo, a soprano in the choir. "We perform about four to five times a month at different events."

The officers, who rehearse weekly, have performed at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C., during halftime at Cowboys Stadium and at the Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. If you're expecting amateur hour, think again.

"Yeah, we’re pretty serious," Gallardo said without a hint of bragging. "We have to turn down a lot of performances every month."

The holiday season tends to be the choir's most busy time of year, and it's also its most rewarding. They plan to carole up and down the halls of the Methodist Dallas Medical Center in Oak Cliff and other hospitals, sharing holiday cheer with those who need it most.

"They’re feeling down. They’re feeling bad. They see these cops singing carols — and we’re good, you know. They really enjoy it," Gallardo said. "It’s really awesome to see those faces light up. People tell us that we really made their day. It’s a really good feeling for us, too."
