New Year’s resolutions to lose weight and increase physical activity are common for millions of Americans.

In fact, according to a recent survey by NPR, 51 percent of those who made New Year’s resolutions pledged to exercise more and 35 percent planned to lose weight. No doubt many will take the typical approach of dieting and joining gyms to achieve these goals. Unfortunately, most will fail within 6 months.

History shows that a third of such resolutions will be broken by Jan. 7, half will have lapsed by Valentine’s Day and 60 percent will have fallen off track by July 4.

There are many reasons why people fail with New Year’s resolutions, including unrealistic goals or relying on little more than willpower — an exhaustible resource. For the majority, long-term success will depend on their willingness to change. This willingness or readiness follows a predictable process, and when combined with a belief that the change is truly possible, the chances of changing habits and achieving set resolutions are greatly increased.

To help people achieve their resolutions, Clairevista Vitality Club will offer a presentation on the 5 Stages of Change, along with key strategies used to break habits and overcome temptation, including cues, routines and rewards. Those interested in the presentation may join Dustin Thibodeaux, Clairevista manager and coach, Friday, Jan. 11 at 6 p.m. at Clairevista Vitality Club (2001 Sylvan Ave., Dallas, TX 75208).

The presentation is free, but seating is limited. Please call 214-734-8204 or email chrisw@clairevista.com for availability.
