(l to r): Methodist Richardson Medical Center Foundation President Brenda Duckett congratulates Legacy Award recepients Bob and Jean Macy.

The Methodist Richardson Medical Center Foundation honored members of its Heritage Society at a luncheon on September 10, 2014. The luncheon, held at the Renaissance Hotel, was an opportunity for the foundation to thank members for their support of the hospital and to give them an update on programs that they have helped to fund.

The Heritage Society was established in 1999 to offer donors the opportunity to create a personal legacy to benefit health care in North Texas. The society’s membership is composed of philanthropic individuals who have donated $25,000 or more through cumulative gifts, an estate, or through qualifying planned gifts.

In addition to a presentation by Methodist Richardson President E. Kenneth Hutchenrider, FACHE, about the recent opening of the new125-bed hospital at the Bush/Renner campus and plans for the facility at the Campbell campus, attendees were also given the opportunity to interact with staff from various departments throughout the hospital, including the Cancer Center, surgery, cardiology and the auxiliary program.

This year’s program also included the induction of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Macy into the Heritage Society. The Macys are longtime supporters of the hospital. In addition to serving on the Methodist Richardson Medical Center Foundation Board of Directors, Mr. Macy also volunteers as a Chaplain.

Heritage Society members have donated more than $3,250,000 since the society was established.

Methodist Health System has been recognized for the fifth consecutive year as one of the nation’s “Most Wired,” according to the results of the 2014 Most Wired Survey released today in the July issue of Hospitals & Health Networks magazine. The award honors achievement in the use of health care information technology. Methodist is one of only 16 hospitals or health care systems in Texas recognized.

The nation’s Most Wired hospitals are using health information technology (IT) to improve performance in a number of areas, according to Health Care’s Most Wired 2014 Survey released July 9. As a field, hospitals are focused on expanding and adopting IT that protects patient data, optimizes patient flow and communications and promotes safety.

“Methodist has worked to deliver advanced clinical decision support directly to our patients by deploying high-adoption Computerized Physician Order Entry with evidence based order sets,” says Sam Bagchi, MD, senior vice president, CMIO and chief quality officer, Methodist Health System. “Methodist physicians are completely committed to using technology to improve the quality and safety of our care.”

Among the actions that Methodist is taking for effective use of medical information technology:

  • 2013 pilot participant in The North Texas Accountable Healthcare Partnership (NTAHP) secure health information exchange to improve the delivery of      patient care.
  • High adoption of Computerized Physician Order Entry using evidence orders and order sets
  • Methodist checks drug interactions and drug allergies when medications are ordered as a major step in reducing medication errors.
  • Methodist uses barcode enabled bedside medication administration at all its facilities to ensure the right medication is given to the right patient at the right time.

“This year’s Most Wired organizations exemplify progress through innovation,” says Rich Umbdenstock, president and CEO of the American Hospital Association. “The hospital field can learn from these outstanding organizations ways that IT can help to improve efficiency.”

Effective use of health information technology helps equip caregivers with the information needed to drive quality, safety and efficiency and to achieve best possible outcomes while managing capacity, reducing costs, and coordinating care across multiple settings.

Health Care’s Most Wired Survey, conducted between Jan. 15 and March 15, asked hospitals and health systems nationwide to answer questions regarding their IT initiatives. Respondents completed 680 surveys, representing 1,901 hospitals, or roughly 33 percent of all U.S. hospitals.

The July H&HN cover story detailing results is available at hhnmag.com.

For the eleventh consecutive year, the Dallas Business Journal recognized Methodist Health System as one of the Best Places to Work in North Texas. Methodist placed 6th in large businesses from 60 finalists in small, medium, and large companies across Dallas, Collin, Tarrant, Denton, and immediately adjacent counties.

Winning honorees and specific rankings were announced June 19 during an awards luncheon at the Fairmont Dallas Hotel and will be featured in a special edition of the publication. Additionally, Methodist was the highest ranked health system in the large business category and the only health system to place as a finalist for at least 11 years of the 12-year program.

“Being recognized for 11 years in a row as a best place to work is a tremendous accomplishment for our Methodist family,” says Methodist Health System President and CEO Stephen L. Mansfield, PhD, FACHE. “I believe this honor reflects our mission to not only serve our patients and their families, but to create and maintain a work environment that serves our most valued asset – our employees.”

Methodist employees voted their workplace as a 2014 Best Places to Work site through surveys conducted by the Dallas Business Journal in the regional employer recognition program. Participation is open to companies across Dallas, Collin, Tarrant, Denton, and immediately adjacent counties.

Selection is based on employee responses to surveys and hundreds of Methodist Health System employees voted in the competition by completing an extensive online survey. Surveys reflect topics such as work environment, innovations and new ideas, people practices, personal growth and development, leadership in the organization, employee recognition, and how things work day to day. Competition is divided into three different categories: small businesses (1-99 North Texas employees); mid-sized businesses (100-499 local employees); and large businesses (500 or more local employees).

To earn the prestigious designation, companies must meet or exceed a national best practice score for their category, as determined by an independent research company performing more than 5,000 company surveys across the country each year.

In May, Methodist was recognized as one of the 150 Great Places to Work in Healthcare by Becker’s Hospital Review for the fourth year in a row.

The Methodist Dallas Medical Center Wound Care and Hyperbaric Center, a member of the Healogics network, is participating in the first Healogics National Wound Care Awareness Week from June 2 to June 6. One of nearly 600 Healogics managed centers; Methodist Dallas Wound Care and Hyperbaric Center offers advanced therapies to patients suffering from chronic wounds.  Program directors across the nation will dedicate the entire week to visiting local physician offices to provide education to help staff identify patients that may benefit from advanced wound care.

Chronic wounds affect millions of people in the U.S. and the incidence is rising, fueled by an aging population and increasing rates of diseases and conditions such as diabetes, obesity, and the late effects of radiation therapy.  Untreated, chronic wounds can lead to diminished quality of life and possibly amputation of the affected limb.

“There are many patients living with non-healing wounds who are unaware of treatments available in their local communities,” said D. Scott Covington, MD, FACS, chief Medical Director for Healogics, Inc.  Covington goes on to say, “Adjunctive therapies for appropriate patients can help heal wounds faster than traditional methods.  We want to make advanced wound care available to all patients who would benefit but we must educate the communities we serve about the services we offer.”

People with wounds that have not improved with traditional methods of treatment in four weeks may benefit from a visit to Methodist Dallas Wound Care and Hyperbaric Center.  To schedule an appointment, please call 214-947-5000 or visit www.MethodistHealthSystem.org/woundcare.

The accredited cancer program at Methodist Dallas Medical Center was one of three in Texas, and 74 nationwide, to earn the 2013 Outstanding Achievement Award presented by the Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) this month.

The purpose of the award is to raise the bar on quality cancer care, with the ultimate goal of increasing awareness about quality care choices among cancer patients and their loved ones.  In addition, the award is intended to:

  • Recognize those cancer programs that achieve excellence in providing quality care to cancer patients.
  • Motivate other cancer programs to work toward improving their level of care.
  • Facilitate dialogue between award recipients and health care professionals at other cancer facilities for the purpose of sharing best practices.
  • Encourage honorees to serve as quality-care resources to other cancer programs.

“This recognition is an affirmation of the compassionate quality care we provide for all our cancer patients,” says Allison Vo, RN, director of cancer program administration at Methodist Dallas. “We are proud to be one of only three cancer programs in Texas to earn this prestigious distinction.”

Programs are evaluated on 34 cancer program standards categorized within one of five cancer program activity areas: cancer committee leadership, cancer data management, cancer conferences, clinical services and quality improvement.  Programs are further evaluated on seven commendation standards.  Award recipients must have received commendation ratings in all seven commendation standards, in addition to receiving a compliance rating for each of the 34 cancer program standards.

“More and more, we’re finding that patients and their families want to know how the health care institutions in their communities compare with one another,” said Daniel P. McKellar, MD, FACS, chair of the CoC.  “They want access to information in terms of who’s providing the best quality of care, and they want to know about overall patient outcomes.  Through this recognition program, I’d like to think we’re playing a small, but vital role, in helping them make informed decisions on their cancer care.”

The 74 award-winning, cancer-care programs represent approximately 14 percent of programs surveyed by the CoC in 2013. “These 74 cancer programs currently represent the best of the best—so to speak—when it comes to cancer care,” added Dr. McKellar.  “Each of these facilities is not just meeting nationally recognized standards for the delivery of quality cancer care, they are exceeding them.”

Methodist Health System has been named one of Becker's Hospital Review's "150 Great Places to Work in Healthcare" for the fourth consecutive year.

"Methodist is honored to once again be recognized as one of the best employers in the health care industry," says Methodist Health System CEO and President Stephen L. Mansfield, PhD, FACHE. "Fostering a healthy work place underscores our mission to provide excellent quality patient care in a compassionate, healing environment."

Methodist was lauded by Becker's for earning widespread local and national recognition as a great place to work. In 2014, the Dallas Business Journal named Methodist one of the "Best Place to Work in North Texas" for the eleventh consecutive year and one of the "Healthiest Employers in North Texas." The Advisory Board recognized Methodist for excellence in engagement and earlier this year, Methodist was awarded platinum distinction as a "Fit Friendly" company by the American Heart Association.

Becker's also recognized Methodist for excellent employee benefit packages and tuition reimbursement, the way its "faith-based mission resonates with staff," and for the 30 Minute Club, in which Methodist employees can choose to donate a portion of each paycheck to capital improvement projects, the Basic Employee Needs (BEN) Fund, the Life Shines Bright Pregnancy Program, or the Methodist General Fund.

The "150 Great Places to Work in Healthcare" list was developed through nominations and editorial research. Organizations were chosen for their robust benefits, wellness initiatives, professional development opportunities, and work environments that promote employee collaboration and satisfaction.

Dale Munday, Methodist Health System

The Dallas-Fort Worth Hospital Council (DFWHC) Foundation has named Dale Munday, graphics center specialist, Methodist Health System, as its 2014 System Employee of the Year.

Munday was one of 14 award recipient in eight categories honored by the DFWHS Foundation at its 18th Annual Employee of the Year Awards ceremony on April 22 at the Irving Convention Center. Nominations were accepted from more than 50 area hospitals.

I can think of no one more deserving of this recognition than Dale Munday, says Jim O’Reilly, vice president of human resources, Methodist Health System. “Dale is an energetic, reliable resource for his own team and the many internal departments who depend on him.”

Munday was cited in his nomination for working short staffed for most of 2013 due to an unexpected, extended leave of a co-worker. The nomination states, “Without hesitation, he assumed his co-worker’s duties in addition to maintaining his regular responsibilities, effectively performing the jobs of two employees.”

Munday was also commended for his service away from the workplace. As a former electrician, he travelled to Galveston to restore power to homes damaged by Hurricane Ike, remodeled a home in Oklahoma for a disabled person, and hosts an annual fish fry to benefit retired firefighters in Irving.

“Dale is extremely humble, never seeking out praise or accolades for his acts of kindness,” O’Reilly says. “His contributions come from his character which has benefitted countless people”

The latest Hospital Safety Score released April 29 by The Leapfrog Group ® (Leapfrog) awarded Methodist Health System hospitals the following grades:

Methodist Charlton Medical Center – A

Methodist Dallas Medical Center – B

Methodist Mansfield Medical Center – A

Methodist Richardson Medical Center – A

The Hospital Safety Score is compiled under the guidance of analysts identified by Leapfrog, an independent industry watchdog, as the nation’s leading experts on patient safety and is administered by Leapfrog. The first and only hospital safety rating to be peer-reviewed in the Journal of Patient Safety, the Score is free to the public and, according to Leapfrog, designed to give consumers information they can use to inform themselves and their families when facing a hospital stay.

“Our number one priority is the quality of care we provide to our patients in a safe and compassionate environment,” says Sam Bagchi, MD, vice president, chief medical informatics officer, chief quality officer, Methodist Health System. “We are proud of the progress we’ve made in our system’s overall performance in this survey which reflects our relentless commitment to excellence and the dedication of our doctors, nurses, and hospital team.”

In the latest patient safety survey, all four Methodist hospitals either retained their “A” from the previous survey or improved a full letter grade. Methodist Mansfield and Methodist Richardson remained at a grade of “A” from the Leapfrog survey in October 2013. Methodist Charlton improved from a “B” to an “A” and Methodist Dallas rose from a “C” to a “B.”

“Safety should come first for our families when we pick a hospital, because errors and infections are common and deadly,” said Leah Binder, president & CEO of The Leapfrog Group, which produces the Hospital Safety Score. “No hospital is perfect, but we congratulate the Board, clinicians, administration, and staff of Methodist Health System for achieving three “A” ratings and a “B” which shows us that Methodist made the well-being of patients your top priority.”

Calculated under the guidance of Leapfrog’s Blue Ribbon Expert Panel, the Hospital Safety Score uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to produce a single “A,” “B,” “C,” “D,” or “F” score representing a hospital’s overall capacity to keep patients safe from preventable harm. More than 2,500 U.S. general hospitals were assigned scores in spring 2014, with about 32-percent receiving an “A” grade. The Hospital Safety Score is fully transparent, and its website offers a full analysis of the data and methodology used in determining grades.

Methodist voluntarily participates in reports and studies that further its continual quest to seek the highest quality health care for its patients. This is an active choice in the interest of full transparency that strongly supports Methodist’s commitment to continual performance improvement and compassionate quality care. Methodist believes it is important to provide meaningful, accurate, quality information to consumers. Reports such as these are just one of the many sources consumers can use to choose a hospital. Consumers also gain valuable insight from talking with their physicians, nurses, friends and family, or reviewing other quality data, such as that from CDC, Healthgrades, National Quality Forum, and others.
