A recent incident in North Oak Cliff has put some members of the community on edge about solicitors in the area and caused a neighborhood association to send out an email warning about being cautious when strangers knock on your door.

Recently, a local couple let a man posing as an ADT repairman into their home because he claimed to be with a company that had absorbed the company that operates their alarm system, and he needed to check their equipment, according to an NBC report. Eventually, the husband became suspicious and asked him to leave without incident.

The North Oak Cliff United Police Patrol is aware of the situation and is warning residents to be wary of solicitors that could be con men.

Tips For Staying Safe

  • Do not let anybody into your home without knowing exactly who they are.
  • ADT alarm specialists are always required to present a badge, license to operate and business card. (Other alarm companies that solicit business door-to-door should have this identification as well.)
  • You can call a company to verify a worker is employed there before letting them into your home.
  • Notify the police of any suspicious activity.
