Readers 2 Leaders kicked off its inaugural Lanes 2 Literacy event on Thursday, March 30th, with resounding success! Bowl & Barrel at the Shops at Park Lane hosted 275 guests as they laced up their bowling shoes to support Readers 2 Leaders’ literacy tutoring programs for children in West Dallas.

Readers 2 Leaders’ founders, Ted and Stephanie Schweinfurth, along with Event Chair Tierney Kaufman Hutchins, welcomed education advocates, business leaders and long-time Readers 2 Leaders supporters. Fun was had by all, with guests teaming up to bowl with friends and co-workers. Corporate and individual sponsors fielded teams to compete for top bowler prizes; sponsors included Istation, Energy Transfer Partners, The Warner Group Inc, Locke Lorde LLP, TSP (Technology Service Professionals), EC Cares and Bailey Brauer PLLC.  The team from McDermott Will & Emery took home the coveted “Perfect Name” prize for their team name: “Bowlable Hours.”

Readers 2 Leaders was formed in 2010 and just celebrated its 5th anniversary. It currently serves 600 children and families through its programs. The $51,000 raised from sponsorships, a silent auction, wine pull and raffle will enable Readers 2 Leaders to continue providing much-needed tutoring to children who could otherwise not afford these services.

The R2L team is already preparing for Lanes 2 Literacy 2018. Visit readers2leaders.org to learn more about the organization's innovative program.

It’s time for summer camp 2015; Team Read Investigates! This year Readers 2 Leaders is proud to announce a partnership with the Dallas Arboretum. The Arboretum will bring an exciting science based nature aspect to the camp, providing the children with hands on opportunities to discover the world around them.  1st – 3rd graders will focus on the wonders of plants and learn about our planet earth, while 4th– 5th graders will explore the diversity found within nature and investigate the components of our earth. The nature program will coincide with the R2L Team Read intensive reading curriculum designed to improve student’s reading skills and encourage a lifelong love of reading.

The Team Read Investigates summer camp will run two sessions June 15th-July 23rd with the choice of 9am-12pm or 1pm-4pm, and will include 84 students between the ages of 5 and 10.

Readers 2 Leaders serves the students of West Dallas, one of the most economically disadvantaged areas in the US. The R2L mission is to develop and grow the reading skills of children in West Dallas ages 3-10 so that they succeed in school, graduate and leave school prepared to live productive lives.  During the 2013-2014 school year, 96% of R2L students accelerated their rate of learning based on a leveled reading assessment, averaging 2.1 months of growth in literacy skills for every month enrolled in Team Read.

None of this great work would be possible without the incredible volunteers who work with R2L. With over 100 volunteers in 5 West Dallas elementary schools as well as at the Booktown afterschool program and summer camp, students are given one-on-one tutoring and support by caring professionals in the Dallas community.
